What is Thyroid Disease

Thyroid symptoms can be easily managed if you understand what the thyroid is, how it works and how you can nourish it.

The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck. This butterfly-shaped gland contains two globes - one on the left side of the trachea and the other on the right side. The thyroid gland is responsible for making thyroid hormones, which affect nearly every type of tissue in the body and regulate metabolism.

Numerous conditions can be caused by either too much or too little thyroid hormone, including cancer, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism. Additionally, nodules and excessive growth of this all-important gland can compress structures located in the neck, causing deformities, which can cause breathing or speech difficulties.

1. Thyroid Cancer - Cancer of the thyroid gland is common; in fact, approximately 56,000 new cases of this cancer are diagnosed yearly. Females are three times more likely to have thyroid cancer than men are. Additionally, this cancer is more common in patients older than 30. The symptoms of thyroid cancer include neck pain, enlarged lymph nodes, and a hoarse voice.

2. Enlarged Thyroid Gland - An enlarged thyroid gland is often called a goiter. These enlargements are noncancerous. Goiters may be removed for cosmetic purposes; however, they are usually only removed if the enlarged gland presses on the structures within the neck or esophagus.

3. Thyroiditis - Thyroiditis occurs when the thyroid gland becomes inflamed. It is often accompanied by fever and pain, but there is no infection. The most common cause of thyroiditis is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This condition occurs when the thyroid cannot convert iodine into the thyroid hormone. The thyroid enlarges to compensate for the reduction in thyroid hormones within the body.

4. Hyperthyroidism—Hyperthyroidism occurs when the body produces too much thyroid hormone. It can cause rapid weight loss, excessive sweating, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, hand tremors, and sleep issues.

5. Hypothyroidism-Hypothyroidism occurs when the body does not produce enough of the thyroid hormone. This disease is the polar opposite of hyperthyroidism. Patients suffering from hypothyroidism may experience weight gain, decreased libido, memory loss, constipation, cold intolerance, and fatigue. It could also cause hair loss, coarse hair, dry skin, and weakness.

6. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome- Although not found in the thyroid region, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can be directly related to hypothyroidism. This disease negatively impacts thousands of women each year. The symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, include infertility, increased facial hair growth, acne, dandruff, and cysts on the ovaries.

There are many things you can do to help improve your thyroid functions and get your thyroid to function properly. This all-important gland controls metabolism, energy, and sleep patterns. Thyroid support supplements such as pure parathyroid can help protect and nourish the thyroid. The following list of nutrients can help ensure your thyroid is functioning properly.

a. Zinc

b. Iodine

c. Selenium

d. Vitamin A

e. Vitamin C

f. Vitamin E

g. B vitamins

Managing your thyroid symptoms is easy when you understand the thyroid, how it works, and how to nourish it.
