Humidifiers For Asthma

Humidifiers For Asthma

With the constant heating in winter, the air becomes dry and irritates the mucous membranes causing respiratory distress.  A portable home humidifier can increase the moisture level help people suffering from asthma breathe easier.

Many asthma patients have difficulty breathing when exposed to dry air in winter. Increased humidity has been proven to help ease breathing in adults and children with allergies or asthma, especially with other respiratory infections such as flu and colds. However, increased allergens due to high humidity levels can trigger or worsen asthma. Where the room air is too damp, dehumidifiers and air purifiers will help. This is especially true in the summer months.

Dry air can be the source of breathing problems, but excessively moist air can also be a source of problems. During summer, there is too much humidity, and homeowners need to take the necessary measures, such as using dehumidifiers to reduce indoor moisture.

Humidifiers are household devices that emit steam or water vapor to alter the room's humidity level. Ordinary humidifiers available today include central humidifiers, impeller humidifiers, ultrasonic humidifiers, evaporators, and steam vaporizers.

A portable or home humidifier increases the humidity level in a room. They are instrumental when the house is heated in winter. Constant heater use can dry the mucous membranes that line the nose and throat, causing irritation and respiratory distress.

To get the best results from air humidifiers, here are important things that you should do.

  • The humidifiers should be cleaned regularly so molds and bacteria do not grow. These microbes are dangerous for asthma patients.
  • Do not operate your humidifier when the external moisture level exceeds 50 percent. To determine the moisture level, use a humidistat or a hygrometer.
  • If you store your humidification unit for several weeks or months, you should wipe it clean and dry it before using it.
  • To help asthmatic patients open, soothe, and clear their air passages, add a few menthol drops to the humidifier.
  • Keep your rooms in good condition and keep dust at the lowest level.

Consider using air purifiers in addition to the humidifier in your home. This will help ensure the air remains clean, benefiting family members with asthma.

Care must be taken not to increase humidity too much. Excessive moisture creates an environment conducive to the growth of dust mites and allergens, which is unsuitable for people with asthma. It is also an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and mold, which can trigger asthma.

There is a variation in air humidity from one season to another and among the factors that determine the actual level include such things as the weather, season and the place which you live. Too low or too high humidity can cause serious problems not only to people who suffer from respiratory infections such as asthma but also to those of sound health. When you install portal humidifiers, home humidifiers, and air purifiers, you can control the indoor humidity level and keep allergens away.
