Spring brings with it hope and growth, flowers and greenery but also the dreadful allergies! While life threatening allergies should be discussed with your health care professional, there are many, easy natural home remedies that can help you overcome those dreaded seasonal allergies symptoms.

  • Pull the Moisture from the Air

A dehumidifier can be your best friend if you suffer with allergies. The dehumidifier will halt mold and mildew in their tracks by drying out the air. However, if you are allergic to dust, you will need to run an air purifier to remove dust from the air.

  • Salt is Your Friend

Combine half a teaspoon of non-iodized salt and a pinch of baking soda in 4 ounces of distilled water in a shallow dish. Then, gently sniff a small amount of the saline solution up your nose to remove histamines from your sinus cavities.

  • Give Your Pet a Bath

If you have a cat or dog, pollen and other allergens can attach themselves to your pet's fur. Bathe your beloved pet often to keep allergens at bay. Finally, wash your hands after petting your favorite animal as an added precaution.

  • Wash It Off

Pollen is a sticky substance that attaches itself to your clothing, skin and hair. To help prevent allergies from occurring, take a shower and wash your hair to remove any pollen. Additionally, the steam from the shower will open up your sinuses, making it easier for you to breath.

  • Steam Those Allergies Away

Did you know that steam could help soothe irritated sinus cavities? The steam opens up your sinuses and helps alleviate inflammation. Simply boil a few cups of water and pour into a large bowl. Then drape a towel over your head and breathe deeply. When steam starts to dissipate, dip a washcloth in the warm water and lie across the bridge of your nose to further open up your sinuses.

  • Drink It Up

Did you know that a cup of hot tea could help open up the sinuses to relieve a stuffy nose? If you suffer with allergies, a hot cup of peppermint tea may be just what the doctor ordered. The peppermint contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and decongestant properties to help alleviate a stuffy nose, coughing and sneezing.

  • Spice It Up

Wasabi can help open up your sinuses. The fiery allyl isothiocyanates found in wasabi has been shown to improve mucus flow. When your allergies are bothering you, eating Japanese food will help you breathe better. If you do not like wasabi, try 1/4 teaspoon of grated horseradish to open your sinuses up.

  • Stay Indoors

When pollen levels are extreme, staying indoors will help keep your allergies at bay. If you must go outdoors, a dust mask will help filter the air your breath, while a pair of sunglasses can help protect your eyes from allergens. Keep your windows closed and use an air purifier to remove allergens from the air.

  • Remove Rugs and Carpets

Do you seem to sneeze whenever you are at home? If you have rugs or carpets in your house, they may be trapping allergens. Remove the carpets and install hard flooring solutions, such as tile, linoleum or hardwood floors. If the carpeting cannot be removed, vacuum every day to help keep allergens at bay.

  • Avoid Allergens

The best way to keep your allergies at bay is to avoid allergens. If you suffer with grass allergies or hay fever, it may be wise to hire someone to mow your grass and take care of your landscaping.

As you can see, there are many at home treatments you can use to help alleviate allergies. The next time your allergies are bothering you, use some of the tips listed above to help you breath better.
