Home Remedies for Allergies

Spring brings with it hope and growth, flowers and greenery but also the dreadful allergies! Easy natural home remedies can help one overcome them.

Spring brings hope, growth, flowers, greenery, and dreadful allergies! While life-threatening allergies should be discussed with your health care professional, many easy natural home remedies can help you overcome those dreaded seasonal allergies.

Pull the Moisture from the Air

A dehumidifier can be your best friend if you suffer from allergies. The dehumidifier will halt mold and mildew by drying out the air. However, if you are allergic to dust, you must run an air purifier to remove dust from the air.

Salt is Your Friend

In a shallow dish, combine half a teaspoon of non-iodized salt and a pinch of baking soda in 4 ounces of distilled water. Then, gently sniff a small amount of the saline solution up your nose to remove histamines from your sinus cavities.

Give Your Pet a Bath

If you have a cat or dog, pollen and other allergens can attach to your pet's fur. Bathe your beloved pet often to keep allergens at bay. Finally, as an added precaution, wash your hands after petting your favorite animal.

Wash It Off

Pollen is a sticky substance that attaches to clothing, skin, and hair. To help prevent allergies, shower and wash your hair to remove pollen. The steam from the shower will also open up your sinuses, making it easier for you to breathe.

Steam Those Allergies Away

Did you know that steam could help soothe irritated sinus cavities? The steam opens up your sinuses and helps alleviate inflammation. Boil a few cups of water and pour into a large bowl. Then, drape a towel over your head and breathe deeply. When steam dissipates, dip a washcloth in the warm water and lie across the bridge of your nose to open up your sinuses further.

Drink It Up

Did you know a cup of hot tea could help open the sinuses and relieve a stuffy nose? If you suffer from allergies, a hot cup of peppermint tea may be just what the doctor ordered. The peppermint contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and decongestant properties to help alleviate a stuffy nose, coughing, and sneezing.

Spice It Up

Wasabi can help open up your sinuses. The fiery allyl isothiocyanates found in wasabi have been shown to improve mucus flow. Eating Japanese food will help you breathe better when your allergies are bothering you. If you do not like wasabi, try 1/4 teaspoon of grated horseradish to open your sinuses up.

Stay Indoors

Home Remedies for Allergies

When pollen levels are extreme, staying indoors can help keep allergies at bay. If you must go outdoors, a dust mask can help filter the air you breathe, while sunglasses protect your eyes from allergens. Keep your windows closed and use an air purifier to remove allergens from the air.

Remove Rugs and Carpets

Do you sneeze whenever you are at home? If you have rugs or carpets in your house, they may trap allergens. Remove the carpets and install complex flooring solutions, such as tile, linoleum, or hardwood floors. If the carpeting cannot be removed, vacuum every day to help keep allergens at bay.

Avoid Allergens

The best way to prevent allergies is to avoid allergens. If you suffer from grass allergies or hay fever, hiring someone to mow your grass and maintain your landscaping may be wise.

As you can see, there are many at-home treatments you can use to help alleviate allergies. Next time your allergies bother you, use some of the tips listed above to help you breathe better.
