Causes of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is caused by poor lifestyle choices as well as genetics. Healthy weight, rest and exercise can help to  prevent it.

Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes and noninsulin-dependent diabetes, occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body becomes insulin-resistant. Although the exact cause of type 2 diabetes is unknown, scientists believe that environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and genetics can all be linked to it. Many factors can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

1. Obesity- Being overweight puts you at an increased risk of developing adult-onset diabetes. Eighty percent of type II diabetics are overweight or obese. Researchers believe this risk is related to inflammation throughout the body and excess abdominal fat. Both of these conditions can increase the risk of insulin resistance. Losing as little as 10 percent of your body weight reduces your risk.

2. Bad Diet- You are what you eat has never been truer concerning noninsulin-dependent diabetes. Numerous studies have shown those who eat calorie-dense, refined food items and beverages can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, those whose diets are not rich in whole grains and raw fruits and vegetables are at an increased risk of developing this disease. A high-quality supplement will ensure you receive the nutrients your body needs to protect itself from disease.

3. Sedentary Lifestyle- Limited physical activity can increase the risk of adult-onset diabetes. Research has shown that as little as 30 minutes of moderate exercise, including abdominal exercise, can decrease the risk of type II diabetes. Your fitness routine should include aerobic exercise, such as walking or biking, along with resistance exercises, such as weight lifting, to help lower your risk of non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

4. Sleep Habits- Did you know the quality of sleep and the amount of sleep you get can affect your risk of developing noninsulin-dependent diabetes? Several studies have shown that those who sleep less than 5 hours a night or more than 9 hours a night are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. To help protect against adult-onset diabetes, you should aim to get between 7 and 8 hours of sleep each night.

5. Family History- Did you know that your family health history could increase your risk of developing this disease? Type II diabetes is often experienced by those who have a close relative with the disease. If a parent has adult-onset diabetes, their children have approximately a 20 percent chance of developing this disease. Additionally, patients with two parents with type 2 diabetes have about a 50 percent chance of developing it.

6. Ethnicity- Researchers have discovered that African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans have an increased risk of developing type II diabetes. For example, approximately 50 percent of the tribal members of the Pima Indians from Arizona have adult-onset diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can be caused by poor lifestyle choices as well as genetics. While you can do nothing about your genetics, you can help lower your risk of developing this disease by maintaining a healthy weight, getting adequate rest and exercising at least 3 times a week.
